S8P1. Students will examine the scientific view of the nature of matter.
e. Distinguish between changes in matter as physical (i.e., physical change) or chemical (development of a gas, formation of precipitate, and change in color).:

ASSIGNMENTS

Friday 8/26

Introduce the Problem for this unit :

RUBRIC FOR TRADE SHOW VIDEO:
  • Have students generate a "What do we know ?" list
    Have the students revisit their mystery powder lab.
    Explain that not only did they witness the physical & chemical properties of the substances; they were also witnessing physical & chemical changes.
    • Have students generate a "What do we need to know ?" list.
    • Show the students the banana and have them make observations includign: temp, density, color, odor, texture, etc...(These should be recorded)

Monday 8/29

1. Produce Observations

2. This lesson is designed to reinforce the students understanding of physical & chemical changes.

Students are to read and take notes using pages 48-49 (complete section review questions on page 49);

Pages 50- 55 (section review on page 55); 388- top section of page 390;

3. :PC & CP handouts;
(this is good practice for tomorrow's quiz)

HW: Finish class assignment

Tuesday 8/30

1. Formative Assessment: Phys & Chem Changes (PLICKERS):We used yesterday's handout :

2. QUIZ over yesterday's handout (irespond)

3. produce observations

Wednesday 8/31
1. produce observations
2. handout:

Thursday 9/1

1. porduce observations
2. Lab Stations: These are designed to formatively assess their ability to distinguish between physical & chemical changes and to base this on the scientific evidence learned from the previous 2 lessons.

HOMEWORK:
You will be working on a lab in class tomorrow that will allow you to observe multiple chemical changes. You will be completing ONLY the research portion of the lab for homework. You will perform the lab and complete the analysis in class. Refer to the NOTES page to assist you in completing the research section.
THIS IS THE RESEARCH PORTION TO BE COMPLETED:
THIS DOCUMENT CONTAINS NOTES THAT MIGHT BE HELPFUL IN COMPLETING THE RESEARCH PORTION:

Fri 9/2
1. produce observations
2. Graded Lab: Chemistry in a Ziploc Bag:

This lab is to be turned in for a grade!
