PBL: Physical & Chemical Properties

The Problem for this Unit:
OL-PBL-Problem-1-Phy-and-Chem-Properties.pptx
  1. Introduce the problem ...see PPT presentation (above)
Discussion based on the following format:
  • What's the problem?
  • Record: What do we already know?
  • Record: What do we need to know?
2. Large group discussion regarding : What do we know? (Have kids maintain a list or post on PBL wall)
3. Generate a list of questions regarding: What do we need to know? (They should reflect on the problem statement as well as the presentation of the solution in order to generate these questions) .

Thursday 8/10
1. Observe the substances that the security training officers have indicated the test substance will come from.
powders: baking soda, baking powder, baby powder, cornstarch
liquids: water, isopropyl alcohol, clear hand sanitizer
metals: copper, aluminum, steel
Have students make observations of all the substances and identify the physical and chemical properties of each (using their research notes). They will use this information for the certification test. They should use the their notes from reading textbook pages 38-47 & 50-51 as well as research notes to make sure that they cover all of the physical & chemical properties.

Any properties that they cannot identify must be researched on the Internet.
